According to analysts at Vantage Market Research, the Pharmaceutical Packaging market is anticipated to achieve USD 500 Billion by 2032 with a CAGR of 15%. With the opening of a new production facility in Wilson, North Carolina, SCHOTT Pharma, a leading manufacturer of pharmaceutical drug containment solutions and delivery systems, announced a major expansion. This strategic move, fueled by a 1 million investment, aims to bolster the domestic production of prefillable syringes. It’s expected to add over 400 jobs to the region and contribute to the growing need for syringes designed for deep-cold storage and transportation of mRNA-based therapies, as well as glass prefillable syringes for GLP-1 therapies.
With groundbreaking expected by the end of 2024, SCHOTT Pharma's new site will be operational by 2027, providing a significant boost to the U.S. supply chain for glass and polymer prefillable syringes. A major need in the pharmaceutical sector is addressed by this facility's focus on messenger RNA medicines, e.g. vaccines and other critical biologic treatments. In addition, glass prefillable syringes for GLP1 therapy that are needed to treat conditions such as diabetes and obesity will be manufactured at the site.
The new facility is set to triple SCHOTT Pharma's contribution of glass and polymer syringes to the U.S. market by 2030. By producing these critical components domestically, SCHOTT Pharma aims to reduce lead times, cut transportation costs, and mitigate risks of future shortages. This investment aligns with the growing emphasis on pandemic preparedness and resilience in the pharmaceutical supply chain.
"As drug manufacturers develop and expand the use of mRNA, GLP-1, and other biologic therapies that require precise drug stability and storage properties, SCHOTT Pharma will be able to fill those orders quickly and efficiently here in the U.S.," said Andreas Reisse, CEO of SCHOTT Pharma.
The facility's location in Wilson, North Carolina, was chosen for its favorable pool of local talent and proximity to the Research Triangle area, known for its universities, healthcare companies, and biopharma resources. Christopher Cassidy, President of SCHOTT North America, stated that expanding operations in the U.S. addresses rapidly growing demand for high-value solutions in the pharmaceutical industry.
The project garnered strong support from local and state government entities, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and the North Carolina General Assembly, among others.
With over two decades of manufacturing experience at its Lebanon, PA, facility, SCHOTT Pharma's expansion in Wilson is poised to play a pivotal role in the pharmaceutical packaging market. The new site not only represents a substantial investment in the U.S. economy but also offers potential for future expansion as the demand for innovative pharmaceutical packaging solutions continues to grow.
